The Ageing Well Public Talk Series is a novel educational intervention aligned with national/international priorities on health literacy, prevention, self-care/self-management, and health disparities while aging. The AWPTS translates knowledge and evidence base into innovative learning opportunities and is structured around the Five Pillars for Ageing Well (nutrition, hydration, physical, social and cognitive stimulation).
The AWPTS uniquely and innovatively blends co-design/co-production/co-dissemination with diverse stakeholders inclusive of people with lived experiences of ageing and or living with long term conditions. The AWPTS make visible the needs of diverse ageing UK-wide communities, engineers successful co-production/co-delivery of tailored courses and training packages for new markets/stakeholders, and generates capacity building opportunities across the four nations and also REFable outputs.
The AWPTS is now starting season 8 and has well established the support it provides to the public and practitioners, spearheading inclusive co-production of resources, transforming AWPTS into a significant global portfolio of articles, podcasts, Hubs, courses, and films. Feedback demonstrates achieving significant reach and impact in improving health literacy, confidence in self-care/self-management. AWPTS (Finalist & runner-up as People’s Choice at Research-Excellence-Awards2022) generated partnerships and discourse via social media, YouTube, OpenLearn, BBC, and The Conversation (engaging over 530,000 globally), facilitated OU students learning (KYN326), and is cited as ‘good practice’ in UK Parliament briefings and the Centre for Social Justice Policy Report. The AWPTS is now nationally/internationally mediating the broader field of ageing well, while significantly building capacity within the university and beyond.
Within the program, we offer one talk per month, and the talks are open to anyone with an interest in aging and aging well: the public, practitioners, and professionals who support aging populations in their professional roles – with whom the AWPTS is also co-designed / co-produced / co-disseminated.
